Profit from Low Goals at Belfield

Bray Wanderers v Galway United
Bray broke a four game losing streak with a last gasp draw at home to Cork City last time out; this week they take on the only side in the league still without a win. The Tribesmen expect to bring the same squad that pushed Bohemians all the way at Dalymount Park last weekend. Are they still too good to be hugging the relegation spots? It’s a results business and the visitors are producing performances at the moment. At a price of 12/5 in places however, I'll take another spin with Cousins men.

Derry City v Bohemians
Nutsy is in the ‘angry threats’ stage of his fledgling career in the North West. Derry City are a crew that are seriously out of sorts, as the transition from Steven Kenny’s Happy Days Troupe to Nutsy’s Grinders is being undermined on all sides by increasingly disillusioned players and greasy fingered goalies. This is the time to be playing them so. Kevin Hunt returns for the visitors, while Dessie Byrne takes the warm spot on the physio’s table. Even at this early stage the win is vital for both sides in order to hang onto the socks of Drogheda and Pats. If I find any 3/1 Bohs I'll have an interest, but I don't expect to.

Drogheda United v Cork City
Drogheda’s injury woes are over documented at this stage, they still managed to put Pats to the sword in extra time on Monday night. Glen Fitzpatrick serves a suspension for his red card at Rovers last weekend. Cork City’s disrupted season continues; Sean Kelly is out – potential replacement Brian O’Callaghan is doubtful as is Cillian Lordan – while John O'Flynn is, you guessed it, doubtful. This pair managed just three goals between them in five meetings last term. Not one for betting really.

Rovers injury list continues to grow at a faster rate than the grass on the scrublands of Tolka Park. Aidan Price’s absence continues; Paul Shiels will be out for another couple of months; now Eric McGill faces a surgeon’s bill. Tadhg Purcell, Ger Rowe and Danny O’Connor are all 50/50 cases for this one, against a wounded Pats side who will be keen to reassert their dominance at the summit. Doesn't appeal as a betting proposition

UCD V Longford Town
The possibility of a goal glut will not have them thronging into Belfield for this one. The Students have managed clean sheets in their last four engagements; Alan Matthews side have bulged the net but once on the road thus far, and will be without the services of Daire Doyle through suspension. These are the nitty gritty games where the Students usually pick up vital points. Tony McDonnell has been eased back into action and may start for the home side, along with Ronan Finn. It may sound obvious, but low goals is the way to go, with a punt on 0-0 also.

Following a promising start, it’s been an uphill journey for Leo Tierney’s squad. Conceding 8 times without reply in 3 matches has not helped. Pats to take the points out West

Bohemians v Galway United

Bohs last week presented their credentials for a full inspection against current table-toppers St. Pats, and were not found wanting. This presents a daunting scenario then for a Galway side which hasn't managed a goal on the road yet. The time for all the 'false position' guff has to stop now if United are to survive in the top tier. Last week presented them with an ideal chance to get a first win under their belt; yet again they fluffed their lines. However Bohs look to short for a bet. Pass.

Bray Wanderers v Cork City

Three defeats on the bounce, aligned with a publicly apologetic manager surely is beginnning to wear thin for followers of the Seagulls. There were big changes in the playing staff off-season, but on the pitch not much has changed. Schoolgirl defending has been their downfall, and a Cork City outfit which is beginning to feel it's way into the season will surely take full advantage. 10/11 is a betting price for the Leesiders.

Derry City v UCD

OK, so the Students failed to score against the Foylesiders in 4 meetings last term - but let's call a stocking a stocking - they are giving them away at the moment. What a headache Nutsy has....does he place his confidence in PJ or Ola? The suggestion is that there would still be a problem if they were both to play. Anyway, it's Pat Fenlon's job to ponder the problem. UCD do exactly what it says on the tin; just add goals. Derry have cost me enough money so far, no further betting on their games until they sort out their cat-astrophe.

Every football hacks' nightmare sentence...'your fired!' Nope it's, 'your covering Longford and Waterford on Friday night.' Between them, these two hobbits of the 2007 season have amassed four goals and four points from a combined total of twelve outings. Bizarrely, Longford have taken 'nil points' at home, while Waterford have taken 'nil points' on the road. Doesn't this mean that something's got to give? Rather than recommending a bet I would just say don't back Longford at a short price.

Shamrock Rovers v Drogheda United

Two sides steeped in the unglamorous art of defending clash in what's likely to be a low scoring game. Unfortunately for the Italians amongst us, some of the league's finest protagonists of the genre will not be on show, with Gavin, Gartland and Price all injured. Paul Doolin's squad is dangerously close to critical mass, and they have the Setanta Cup semi-final just around the bend. Pat Scully will be relishing this challenge on behalf of his impressive young side as they find their level in the Premier League. Too many uncertanties about the Drogs line up to have a bet.

Sligo Rovers v St. Patrick’s Athletic

The Saints of course provide the opposition in the aforementioned Setanta semi; but they return to league action having dropped their first points of an exhilirating season thus far. Richmond Park wasn't built in a day, and word of Stephen Rice's man-marking job on Joe Ndo will surely have reached Leo Tierney's lobes. Pats have taken maximum points on the road; Rovers must end a run which has seen them lose two on the trot, and fail to score on both occasions. Pats are a top-price 6/5 at Bet Chronicle, it's a bit of value and my only significant bet this weekend.

Derry and Galway the bankers

Cork City v Shamrock Rovers

City will be buoyed by their demolition of Derry City; they are unlikely to find Rovers in such benevolent form. Pat Scully's Scrooge-like backline has conceded against Bohs (twice) but kept clean sheets in their five other engagements thus far. The abilities of John O'Flynn and Roy O'Donovan will take the game to another level for the young Hoops, who significantly, will be without skipper Aidan Price again. Barry Ferguson is an experienced campaigner, and with Danny O'Connor and Andy Myler available again, this promises to be an intriguing contest. PaddyPower are 9/2 against a Rovers win, looks a little big. I'll have a modest punt.

Drogheda United v Sligo Rovers
It's been a classic case of 'Living Next Door To Leo' for the Sligo Rovers board. The stand-in boss has impressed having been left to reassemble the scattered pieces of the Bit O'Red season. Conor O'Grady completes a suspension for the visitors. Meanwhile Paul Doolin must now plan without lynchpin Jason Gavin while attempting to stymie his side's newfound lust for scoring. The Drogs failed to impress on their last outing; the faithful will expect more at United Park.

The bottom two merge - clash would be too strong a term - at Terryland Park. This is United's opportunity to register that elusive first win, against a Longford side who are currently sponsored by dismal. Defeat for Alan Matthews side will be a worryingly familiar scenario... the closest they've come to tasting victory was defeat in a penalty shootout at Athlone Town. Lovely; this is what it's all about, as Bohs become the latest side attempting to pierce the bubble of invincibility and brashness surrounding the SuperSaints. If the voices in my head are correct, Bohs didn't manage three victories on the bounce last season; they're coming nicely to the boil now and this Dublin Derby will provide a prostate examination of the credentials of both combatants. Bohs are at full strength; Anto Murphy and Stephen Quigley are doubts for John McDonnell's side. At the prices Bohs look a worthy investment - 10/3 at BlueSquare offering the best return I've seen so far.

Waterford United v Derry City

If it is true that Waterford United are set-up for the First Division, well then fans will be pleased that all seems to be unfolding in accordance with their plan. Four consecutive league reversal with nine goals conceded is First division form; but this week the Derry City School of Goalkeeping Excellence comes to the RSC. Pat Fenlon needs a win and a performance from his players before their unity unravels completely; this tie presents him with an excellent opportunity for both. Derry are overpriced and are another to be backed this weekend. Again Blue Square are biggest at 10/11.

CARNEGIE PREM GAMES

Generally these games are a betting minefield at this stage of the season. Teams with little to play for may field a bunch of kids, and while that is of course the club's perogative, it's no fun if you've backed that team to win thinking they would field their strongest XI. El Punter's powder will be kept pretty dry for the remainder of the IPL campaign.

Coleraine v Ballymena United

Coleraine continue their hopeful pursuit of a fourth place spot, with Ballymena United the visitors this week. Tommy Wright's players have their celebrations out of the way now, and can concentrate solely on resurrecting their reputation for unpredictability following a recent
uncharacteristic outbreak of consistency. Stephen Carson and Stuart Clanachan are on the naughty step for this one.

Fourth from bottom hosts fourth from top, with both outfits scrambling desperately for points. The Lurgan Blues have
at last exhibited a pert rear in their last two outings, with a couple of improved performances. Unfortunately performances are of no consequence when you are but a single point from safety with three games remaining. The tortured Mourneview Park faithful have seen their side win just one league fixture in 2007. Portadown redeemed themselves somewhat against Coleraine following their non-appearance against Loughgall last weekend. EIRCOM LEAGUE OF IRELAND PREMIER DIVISION

BOHEMIANS V SLIGO ROVERS

Bohs may have kick started their season with their midweek victory over Shamrock Rovers. Glen Crowe netted for the second successive game; a boon to all at the club. Sligo Rovers haven’t conceded since their seasonal opener versus Derry City, and have taken maximum points without conceding, from their two engagements on the road thus far. Not bad for a managerless side. Conor O’Grady is suspended for the visitors, who would like nothing better than to complicate Sean Connor’s task at the Big Club. BRAY WANDERERS V SHAMROCK ROVERS

Rovers are not quite up to speed yet; their victories have come against hapless Longford Town and fellow promoted side Galway United. They acquitted themselves well in the first half of their clash with Bohs, but the continuing absence of Aidan Price didn’t help in a torrid second half. Fortunately for them, they are up against a Bray side, which seemed to have no understanding of the rudiments of defensive cohesion when they shipped three early bodyblows at Richmond Park last weekend. Eddie Gormley will be looking for a big improvement from his charges. Chris O’Connor is suspended for the Seagulls while there are doubts over Stephen Fox and Colm Tresson. Again Blue Square look a little big as they go 8/5 Rovers, but not big enough to get involved.

GALWAY UNITED V ST. PATRICK’S ATHLETIC

The Tribesmen are the latest fodder for the SuperSaints goalscoring machine; the most optimistic members of the noisy Tribal Army can believe that Pats’ run has to end sometime. Tony Cousins’ side have yet to muster a league win this season and they didn’t inspire confidence as they stuttered past Monaghan United in their midweek League Cup assignment. United need to start taking their chances; NOW. I'm not quite ready to oppose Pats although they miss Anto Murphy and John Frost here. We'll sit this one out.

Drogheda on the other hand are showing some real form and will travel to Flancare Park confident of leaving with three more points. The confidence is warranted and Drogheda should be included in all multiple bets this weekend and I'll be looking to back them in a single at the best price on offer - 10/11 would be real value.

No manager, no wins, the defensive capabilities of Venus de Milo…a lethal cocktail for any side harbouring ambitions of a place in the higher echelons of the league table. Skybet must think it's Christmas rather than Easter as they offer 14/1 for a Loughgall win - ok it probably wont get a return, but at 14/1 I'd back a team of girls under 12's to put it up to Ronnie rudderless reds.
