Bohemians v Longford Town

Sean Connor now has to raise the morale of his side following last week's non-performance in the FAI Ford Cup semi-final clash with Cork City. Ironically, they face City's opponents in the decider, and both sides will be fully focussed on collecting three points. The Gypsys must win their remaining games and hope that the Saints slip up in order to secure UEFA Cup football next term. Longford's targets are less salubrious; they face the same imperative as their hosts, but are targeting second last spot as opposed to second. Alan Matthews' squad will be enhanced by the return of his cup-tied duo of Colm James and Sean Kelly; However Ian Ryan is suspended. The hosts boast a full complement, save for the long term absentee Thomas Heary on what will be an emotional evening for Feargal Harkin - the Bohs favourite makes his final appearance at Dalymount Park after 10 years with the Phibsboro club.

Derry City v Shamrock Rovers

Derry's long list of absentees is challenged ably by Rovers, who will field without Ger Rowe, Eric McGill, Alan Reynolds, Paul Shiels, John Martin, Padraig Amond and Aidan Price. Neither side have acquitted themselves well in recent outings - the Candystripes have collected just two of the last twenty-one points on offer, while the Hoops managed to stop a run of four consecutive defeats last week. With Buzzer Rowe suspended and Tadhg Purcell struggling with a groin problem their run of five games without a goal may well be stretched here, although Pat Scully's side still harbour fading hopes of an Intertoto spot. A must win game for the visitors; another must get it out of the way game for City.

Drogheda United v Bray Wanderers

There's unfinished business to be completed at both ends of the table in United Park on Friday; never before has a Drogheda United captain raised the Premier Division trophy aloft ( never before for that matter, has any captain raised this trophy aloft, as it's a new one!) and that historical event will take place alongside Bray's attempt to swerve a relegation play-off. The Seagulls are but two points better off than eleventh-placed Waterford United but at least have their destiny in their own hands. The sore heads should be in better shape by now and Paul Doolin will be demanding a win to mark the occasion. Paul Caffrey and Mark Duggan are non-runners for the visitors while Ray Kenny is suspended; Clive Delaney, Stephen Fox and Paddy Kavanagh face late fitness tests.

UCD v St. Patrick's Athletic

Following the disappointment of their cup dismissal last weekend UCD could be forgiven for coveting a handy game this weekend. It will be anything but as the Saints come to Belfield in search of the points needed to secure second spot in the table. With five wins from their last six games, Pats are a side in top form and the Students will require a huge effort to raise their efforts in order to pick up the points necessary to safeguard their presence in next season's Premier Division. John McDonnell and his staff will be mindful of the fact that they have failed to defeat Pete Mahon's side in each of their last five attempts.

Waterford United v Galway United

Undoubtedly the crunch tie of the weekend in the top division with both of these sides sailing close to the relegation blade. Waterford's woeful goal difference may well be their downfall, even if they do manage to rein one of their targets in. Both sides are on similar formpaths, although the Blues hold psychological sway with victories in both previous encounters this year. John Sullivan returns from suspension for the visitors, with Greg O'Halloran sitting this week's game out. Daryl Robson is injured, but the return of John Fitzgerald provides a boost for the visitors. Meanwhile Gareth Cronin welcomes Vinny Sullivan back from his brief injury absence; unfortunately for the Blues Karl Bermingham has suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury and is very doubtful, while Alan Mulcahy serves a ban.

Sligo Rovers v Cork City

Sligo Rovers have been something of a bogey team for Cork City this season; that 4-1 defeat at the Showgies will burn long in the minds of the Leesiders. Damian Richardson will be hoping that his squad can build upon last week's impressive showing; three league games without a win has seen his slide slip from pole position to pessimistic hopefuls in the race for the runner-up position. Gareth Farrelly's return may not provide the selection headache anticipated for el Rico- Joe Gamble's suspension leaves a berth vacant in midfield. With Shamrock Rovers breathing on their shirt collars City can ill afford to ease up at this stage, and will be hoping for a charitable performance from the tumbling Bit O'Red. They did manage to stop the rot after four defeats on the bounce with last week's scoreless draw at the aforementioned Hoops. Seamie Coleman returns from a ban for the hosts, but Daniel Ventre must stay seated following his recent red card at Waterford.

Finn Harps v Athlone Town

Harps' record of thirteen wins from fourteen games would suggest to Athlone Town that there is no point in turning up to Finn Park for Friday's televised offering. Strangely, with their season petering out into midtable anonymity, the Midlanders have scooped up seven of the last nine points offered them - the TV cameras often bring out the best in sides, although just scoring against the leaders is proving a difficult enough task. The visitors have not supped from the chalice of success at Finn Park for 15 years! The combination of solid defence and potent attack underscores Harps' tremendous surge to the summit and there is a huge weight of expectation on the shoulders of Paul Hegarty's men. Paul McTiernan's red card in midweek rules him out for the visitors, while the hosts welcome Tony Shields' return from a ban.

Limerick 37 v Shelbourne

A fourth place finish would represent an acceptable season for either of these sides following difficult preparations for varying reasons early on in the year. The hosts hold both the point and positional advantage and a draw will cement their finishing spot. It's been honours even so far for two sides with recently inconsistent records, although Paul McGee's side will welcome the opportunity to avenge the 4-0 pasting they received when the pair last met at Tolka Park. Noel Haverty is on U19 duty with Ireland, while James Hussey's return is not imminent. Wayne Colbert is suspended for the visitors, but Paul McGee will be in the dugout as his appeal to a hefty fine and accompanying suspension is pending.

Wexford Youths v Dundalk

Wexford hauled themselves from the basement with last week's fine win in the Marble City; they will be intent on maintaining their elevated status against a Dundalk side stuck in a pregnant pause. The Lilywhites incurred the wrath of boss John Gill following last week's abject effort and Gill must use the next couple of games to restore his side to the competitive level required if they are to succeed against the vanquished in the First Division title race. Especially displeased with Dundalk's defensive display last time out, we can expect changes in the back four; that said, Dundalk have scored nine without reply in the previous three games between the pair this year. David Crawley and Keith Dunne return from suspension for the visitors, although Paul Marney serves a one-game ban. Wexford will be hoping to have Eric Bradley back from his hamstring injury, especially as midfield dynamo Paul Malone misses the final games of the season through suspension - Ben Brosnan keeps him company this week.

This duo have struggled to put good results back to back of late, but both are due one to maintain the sequence this week. Kildare can at least point to the fact that they lost to the league leaders, while the Cats were collapsing at home to Wexford Youths. Little to inspire here. Dundalk v Limerick 37

The Lilywhites have cemented their place in the promotion play-off semi-final and realistically it's all about keeping things ticking over while they await the outcome of the duel between Finn Harps and Cobh Ramblers. Shaun Williams continues to build up his match fitness in anticipation of greater things to come for the Louthmen. They will take to the field without the suspended duo of Keith Dunne and David Crawley, while Ben Whelehan and Kevin McArdle are still nursing injuries. Thomas McGauley is available after his one game ban as the home side seek to stretch a run of almost 600 minutes without conceding on the plastic pitch. The visitors have little but pride to play for as their season fizzles out. They are not troubled by suspension but are without Brian Buckley, Paul Finucane and Darren Harrington for various reasons. Without an away victory since July of this year, it seems they may be wasting their money on the busfare.

Bohemians v Cork City

The first of this weekend's televised cup semi-finals brings the heavy-hitters out at Dalymount Park. Bohs come into this game in flying form and will be keen to avoid a replay at the Cross. That's not to say we can expect a feast of freeflowing, attacking, football from the home side who have come into their best form of the campaign in recent games. The loss of Stephen O'Donnell, Des Byrne and Liam Burns through suspension may suggest a threadbare look to the side, but there is enough depth in the Gypsys' squad to absorb their loss. Joxer Kelly is an unlikely participant - Harpal Singh's recent performances should negate his absence. Cork have almost a full squad to select from, but will need to step their defensive performance level up a gear following consecutive defeats against Drogheda and the Saints on their last two outings.

UCD v Longford Town

UCD have been preening themselves in anticipation of this game for a couple of weeks now and should be well prepared if nothing else. It will be interesting to see if Pete Mahon reinstates Paul Byrne to the starting eleven; we have seen little of the player who was the Students' top scorer before his prolonged injury absence. Alternatively, PM may opt for the five-man midfield formation which has served his side well this term, with Ronan Finn behind Conor Sammon. Shane Fitzgerald's gazellian traits have been kept in cotton wool since he picked up a hamstring injury and he may well figure. Shane McFaul was injured against Bohemians last Monday but is unlikely to be kept out for such a crunch game. Longford have been concentrating on Premier Division survival and back to back wins will have reignited their self-belief. Alan Matthews' already lean squad is further trimmed by the absence of Sean Kelly, Ian Ryan and Colm James who are cup-tied. Sean Prunty shipped a heavy knock against Bray last Monday and will do well to play any part at Belfield.

Galway United v Derry City

This is one of three cup-finals for the Galwegians between now until the end of the campaign - the only positive for Tony Cousins' side that their destiny is within their own gift. Win all three and they swerve the relegation scenarios; a win against a Derry City side which has all but shut up shop for the year would be a good start. Unfortunately for the hosts they have the worst home record in the division but have not been beaten in league action by the Candystripes this season. That said, Derry City field without ten of their senior players and with just eleven fit first teamers will be trawling the U21's for back-up. Alan Moore, Ola Tidman, Dave McEwen, Sean Hargan, Ken Oman, Mark McChrystal, Ciaran Martyn, Pat McCourt, Gary Beckett and Sammy Morrow comprise the list of unfit Candystripes. Daryl Robson and Shaun Fagan should return for Galway, but John Russell serves a ban. It's difficult to know who will take the field for the visitors such has been the injury list recently and John Robertson has been making use of his fringe players in these nothing games for the Foylesiders.

Drogheda have been supping from the fruits of their success this week and may not be fully focussed on the task ahead; at least that's what fans of the Blues will be hoping for. Stuart Byrne and Eamon Zayed have flu, while both Brian Shelley and James Keddy are doubtful and Richie Baker's absence continues. Meanwhile, Robbie Hedderman is suspended for the hosts who have collected seven points from the last nine on offer; Gareth Cronin reckons he can cover Hedderman's loss and welcomes the return to fitness of striker Karl Bermingham .Paul Doolin may opt to give some of his faithful squad members a night under the floodlights as a thank you for their patience - they'll still make formidable opposition for a side scrambling for points.

Shamrock Rovers v Sligo Rovers

Two sides who are running on empty will most likely not produce the fireworks seen at Tolka when the visitors ended the Hoops' FAI Cup ambitions. The Hoops have conceded an unprecedented eleven goals without reply in their last four games; to put that statistic in some perspective, Pat Scully's side had conceded just 14 times in their previous twenty six outings. Watch out for flying wheels in the vicinity of Tolka Park. Paul Cook has acknowledged that he has had to go to the well once too often with his jaded players; although such pronouncements offer players a readymade excuse to my mind. Barry Ferguson and Ger O'Brien will restore some stability to the hosts' rearguard, while David Cassidy returns from a ban also. The visitors will be without both first choice full backs with recent Irish U21 cap Seamus Coleman and Daniel Ventre - not a recent Irish U21 cap- serving suspensions. Not expected to be one for the neutrals.

Finn Harps v Kildare County

A packed house will roar the Harps onto what their fans are hoping will be a First Division Championship as the momentum builds around Finn Park. Tony Shields serves out his 2 game ban for the visit of the Thoroughbreds, who are without Darren Stapleton themselves but have Eoghan Carew returning from suspension. Philip Byrne picked up a calf injury - no he wasn't involved in an incident with a young cow - last time out and is not expected to figure, but County will be boosted buy the return of striker Philly Gorman. Harps are the only side with the destiny of the title in their own hands and you just cant see them slipping up here. Disclaimer: Football's a funny old game.

Shelbourne v Cobh Ramblers

Following an impressive burst of form in the slipstream of the transfer window, Shelbourne have become somewhat wayward, but still have enough about them to trouble the top sides. This is a tricky assignment for Cobh on a weekend when their rivals look set to pick up maximum points. The Reds have beaten Dundalk and held the Rams at Tolka, but managed just a scoreless draw against Kilkenny City on their last outing in Drumcondra. Dermot Keely's side welcome the suspended trio of Jim Crawford, Stuart Malcolm, Anto Flood and James Chambers - nevertheless Dermot Keely has indicated that he will be giving some of his U21's a taste of first team action. James Hussey and Noel Haverty are both out for the Reds, while Cobh will field without the suspended John Kearney. Nothing but a win will do for the visitors who have conceded just six times on the road this season.

Athlone Town v Monaghan United

There's little at stake between this pair who lie safely shoulder to shoulder in the nether regions of the First Division. It's been pretty much honours even in their three previous encounters and both sides had impressive wins last week. The visitors have no suspension worries, while Barry Burke continues to serve his ban for Mons. There are injury doubts concerning some of Mick Cooke's squad - Alvin Rouse and Willie Doyle primarily, while Peter Darcy, Stephen Finnegan and Jason McCartney will not figure again this term.

Kilkenny City v Wexford Youths

The battle to avoid the wooden spoon takes centre stage in Buckley Park this weekend. The Cats responded to their mauling by Cobh with a fine win in Limerick last weekend and that was enough to lift them off the bottom. In relative terms it would be a great coup for the Youths were they to finish above anybody in their novice season - there would be much merriment in the wine bar - they've collected just three points from the last twenty-seven on offer and if they are going to collect another maximum haul it has to be here. They have already defeated the Cats on their home turf this term. The visitors have no new injury problems; Aaron Ryan has served his ban and returns along with Thomas Hughes. Derek Comerford is also back from the Defence Forces World Games thingy, but has walked straight into a ban.

Bohemians v UCD

This is a great time of the season to be facing the college boys; let alone the fact that this will be their second outing since Friday. Pete Mahon's side have but one focus at the moment - do not get injured for the cup semi-final. The Gypsys are much better equipped to handle the tightly packed schedule, and with Cork and Pats in opposition also, SC's side can make significant strides towards the second spot. UCD seemed both lethargic and aimless against Longford Town on Friday night and it's difficult to see them scoring against the division's most frugal back four. That said, Bohs have fired blanks in this season's two previous meetings. Dessie Byrne and Jason McGuinness returns from suspension for the hosts, but Stephen O'Donnell and Liam Burns join Dessie Byrne in the stands; Dean Pooley replaced McGuinness against Derry City last time out and should retain his spot. Joxer and Mark Rossiter are doubts but Ryan McCann and Harpal Singh provide adequate alternatives.

Cork City v St. Patrick's Athletic

el Rico's charges will have to improve defensively if they are to blunt the rampant saints attack in this mighty showdown. The Cork boss must have choked on his paracetemol as he watched desperate Dan's back four usher Guy Bates towards the City goal on Friday night. Brian O'Callaghan's return may add some steel. Meanwhile in Inchicore the Saints were rattling five past a broken Rovers eleven. It was the Leesiders' first defeat in eleven games, and Denis Behan and John Deadleg O'Flynn should find the Pats rearguard slightly easier to penetrate. At the other end of the park any repeat of the recent defensive generosity will be exploited by the division's top scorers. Darragh Ryan's absence continues, although Cillian Lordan is fit for consideration. Anto Murphy returns from a one game ban; otherwise the Saints squad is likely to remain unchanged. The mother of must win games for both sides!

Longford Town v Bray Wanderers

Bray were boosted by the much anticipated return of Colm Tresson last Friday and the Seagulls' stalwart almost netted a winner within minutes of his introduction from the bench. Eddie Gormley's side have been picking up points with quiet efficiency of late and have lost just one of their last seven league outings. longford's needs are greater. The Town are in a desperate situation and scrambling wildly for points; they haven't drawn on the road since picking up a point at United Park in early June. With their central defensive partnership back in situ last Friday they saw off UCD's wan challenge at Belfield; nothing lkess than a repeat will do beside the DART tracks.

Bray Wanderers v Galway United

Bray celebrate the return of Colm Tresson from his protracted absence through injury for the visit of fellow strugglers Galway United. Eddie Gormley's side have collected points in each of their last four outings as they strive to pull away from the relegation quicksands, but will be keenly aware of Galway's victory at the Carlisle Grounds earlier in the campaign. The Tribesmens' decision to turn professional has not brought the kind of season that their fans had hoped for although they have surprised some of the top sides on occasion. With just one win from their last 6 attempts, and both Shaun Fagan and Daryl Robson ruled out through injury that victory last April seems a long way away.

Derry City v Bohemians

There's little more than pride at stake for a depleted Derry City squad. John Robertson is already building towards the 2008 campaign, and has been introducing some fringe players to the rarefied atmosphere of first team football. Both Pat McCourt and Ken Oman picked up knocks against Bray last Monday and and miss out along with Mark Farren and Sean Hargan; although the Candystripes are unaffected by suspensions. Bohs are handily placed to steal a march on their closest competitors with the fixtures favouring them this weekend; but will have to do so without the suspended Jason McGuinness and Dessie Byrne. John Paul Kelly is a doubt, although the overdue return of Harpal Singh compensates. The last three meetings between this duo have ended scoreless after 90 minutes.

St. Patrick's Athletic v Shamrock Rovers

Despite the potential absence of Joe Ndo, Keith Barker, Colm Foley, Barry Ryan and Anto Murphy's suspension, the Saints will still field a formidable eleven against a nosediving Rovers side. Pats were impressive when they hit Sligo Rovers for three in 45 minutes last weekend, less so in the second period. But with the Hoops struggling at both ends of the pitch. It is difficult to see pat Scully lifting them for the run-in. They field without Barry Ferguson, Ger O'Brien and Dave Cassidy through suspension, with John Martin, Padraig Amond and Aidan Price carrying injuries. Since defeating Bohs at Dalymount a month ago, Rovers have conceded six goals without reply in three outings- their worst run of the season.

UCD v Longford Town

The biggest factor in Longford's favour here will be UCD's preoccupation with next weekend's Ford FAI Cup semi-final. Kevin Doherty and Damien Brennan return to bolster the Town backline as they continue their pursuit of Waterford United. Monday night's draw stopped a run of three defeats on the bounce for the threadbare squad at Flancare; Dave Freeman is out as is Jamie Duffy for the trip to Belfield. For the Students, Shane McFaul returns from suspension and Paul Byrne continues his progression to full fitness. Shane Fitzgerald has been troubled by that bane of speed merchants - a hangstring - for a month or so and may not be risked. Derek Doyle and Paul Crowley are still out. Alan Matthews side have lost just one of their last five meetings with UCD and must fancy their chances at Belfield.

Drogheda United v Cork City

There's rarely much to choose between this pair and with home advantage and just a single point required, it seems likely that Drogheda will capture their first ever Premier Division title before their own at United Park. Richie Baker is their only injury doubt, and there are no suspensions looming for the home side who impressed hugely in last week's dismissal of Shamrock Rovers challenge. Cork City have shown fine form of late, with Denis Behan scoring for fun; Joe Gamble returns to the fray at midfield and John O'Flynn is available again; skipper Dan Murray is back from suspension. Brian O'Callaghan and Cillian Lordan are fitness doubts, while Daragh Ryan's absence continues. Unlikely to be a classic for the TV audience with the Drogs past masters in the art of taking a draw.

Sligo Rovers v Waterford United

Neither side is weakened by suspension for this game, although the Bit O'Red welcome Seamus Coleman back from his sojourn with Don Givens'(no he's not Sicilian) U21 squad. While still mathematically possible, it is highly unlikely that Sligo are going to reach the heights of European qualification and one hopes that Paul Cook's recent claims regarding his squad's limitations have not afforded the playing staff an opportunity to switch off. In fairness, they did recover from an abysmal first half effort last time out to plunder two excellent goals and Faz and Judge provide a potent threat to any defence. The Blues continue to splash about in the relegation placings, but with Galway United within range now they still have a lot to play for; however they have been dogged by their abject achievements away from home - a meagre return of six points from 14 games is the division's worst record.

Limerick 37 v Kilkenny City

To manage just one win in seven attempts and hold your position in the table reflects poorly on the efforts of the clubs beneath Limerick 37; they don't come much more beneath than the Cats.
Off the back of victory over Monaghan United and keeping Shelbourne scoreless they were pulverised by Cobh Ramblers last time out. Consolidation at the back will probably be uppermost in Noel Byrne's mind for this game - City can still overhaul newcomers Wexford Youths in the basement battle. Speaking of Defence Forces, Michael Comerford and Thomas Hughes are on World Cup duty. Limerick are reputed to have parted company with striker Robbie Kelliher during the week; Pat Purcell and Kevin Waters return from suspensions.

Monaghan United v Shelbourne

Last week v Dundalk Mons showed signs of the form they displayed in mid-season when walloping Shels 4-0; Dermot Keely's side have not managed to better this weekend's opponents during their three meetings this season. Mick Cooke's task is not helped by a heavily populated list of absentees - Alvin Rouse, Willie Tyrell, Jason McCartney and Peter Darcy are all carrying what are euphemistically referred to as knocks. Barry Burke continues his suspension; Stephen Finnegan returns from a ban but he too is carrying a knock and will play no part in proceedings.
in fairness to Shels they have attempted to accommodate their hosts with a similar list of non-combatants. Jim Crawford, Jamie Chambers and Stuart Malcolm serve bans, while Anto Flood and Glen Lacey face fitness tests. No doubt they are studying as I write. James Hussey remains sidelined following his domestic accident.

Wexford Youths v Finn Harps

On paper this appears to be the weekend's banker, on grass anything can happen. The Youths secured their first ever away success in top-flight football against Harps; a repeat seems unlikely. With their fate very much at their own feet Higgsy's side have shown impressive degrees of focus and resolve to power their way to the summit. Even in the absence of Harps' captain Tony Shields and the possible loss of defenders Declan Boyle and Johnathan Minnock, the leaders should still have too much for the inconsistent home side. A warning for the league leaders though, Cobh Ramblers could manage only a scoreless draw on their last visit to Wexford.

Cobh Ramblers v Dundalk

This pairing represents the other end of the scale, with everything to play for between two committed sides hurtling hopefully towards the Premier Division. Things are beautifully poised at the top of the table and both sides have returned to winning ways following some indifferent outings in recent games. The crucial difference between the sides this year has been the Lilywhites' failure to score against the Rams in three previous meetings. Cobh's goalfest last weekend has extended their advantage and a win for Dundalk will draw them level, though they will still trail the Rams on goal difference. Stephen Henderson's side have no suspension worries, while Thomas McGauley serves a one game ban for the visitors. Definitely the crunch game of the weekend, with Cobh's nigh impenetrable defence likely to steer them safely harbour.

Bohemians v Galway United

The heavy legs and hearts of the Bohs squad must raise themselves for the visit of Galway United - only Drogheda United have lost fewer on the road than the Tribesmen. Sean Connor is without the option of Des Byrne who serves the first of a 2 match ban, and the injured Thomas Heary. Darren Mansaram should have recovered from his midweek injury, but is a doubt. Neale Fenn and Michael McGinley stand by for the side who have lost just one of their last seven league assignments. Chris Turner and Mark Rossiter may return; both were unavailable for the League Cup Final. Galway have been a mixed bag as befits a side dallying on the fringes of relegation. Last week's vital win over Longford Town has given them some room to breathe and the return of Stephen O'Flynn and Regi Nooitmeer to the squad will boost their spirits. Daryl Robson may be considered by TC as he nears full fitness. Bohs are 4/6 with Bet365 - a value bet.

Bray Wanderers v Cork City

Cork City put their eleven-match unbeaten jaunt on the line at the Carlisle Grounds; but they may have to do so without the guidance of suspended skipper Dan Murray, John Sicknote O'Flynn, Daragh Ryan and Joe Gamble. Colin O'Brien is likely to continue should Gamble miss out , with Leon McSweeney partnering the white-hot Denis Behan up front. Sean Kelly should step up to partner Brian O'Callaghan at the heartbeat of the defence. Bray will be without centre half Clive Delaney and midfielder Mark Duggan through suspension. Speaking of eleven games - that's how many Colin Tresson has missed through injury, his heel is healing, but this game comes too soon for him. Paul Dunphy returns from a ban - The Seagulls have won just once in their last ten attempts, but Cork have not managed to defeat them thus far this term. There's plenty of 5/6 about should you fancy the Leesiders.

Derry City v UCD

Two sides with little to play for meet at the Brandywell; there may be a few sore heads wearing the new Candystripe strip following their midweek success, it's all about next season for Derry City now. Still on the casualty list are Alan Moore, Mark McChrystal, Sammy Morrow and Gary Beckett; fortunately City are untouched by suspensions. Midtable nestmates UCD are building towards a cup semi-final date in two weeks; Paul Byrne is being eased back into the frame, but Shane McFaul misses out through suspension as does the injured Derek Doyle. Shane Fitzgerald's hamstring may not be risked as Pete Mahon caresses his side towards the RDS. This has an end of season look about it and money is best invested elsewhere.

Shamrock Rovers v Drogheda United

Oh what a cracker this could have been, but consecutive defeats have fatally derailed Rovers' title challenge. Of course Pat Scully's side will be going flat out for the win in their efforts to secure second spot, but the absence of Barry Ferguson through suspension will not help their cause. Aidan Price, and Padraig Amond are long-term casualties, while John Martin sits this one out through injury also. United are one of only two sides to collect the maximum at Tolka Park this season, and they have only failed to collect points just once on the road this term. A draw will do nicely for Paul Doolin's squad; Aidan O'Keefe returns to the fold for the game. Little value in betting here, though if anything the draw is a little overpriced.

Sligo Rovers v St. Patrick's Athletic

Rovers have fallen off the pace with defeats in their last two outings; they've also failed to score in four of their last six games. Seamus Coleman is away with Don Givens' U21 side and Adam Hughes is the victim of a head injury sustained at home and is a serious doubt. Darragh Maguire made a welcome return to the Pats' defence during last week's defeat to Bohs - they're fourth failure in seven games. Pats are 6/4 with Ladbrokes, it's a good a bet as you'll find in this week's fixtures.

Longford Town v Waterford United

An absolute must win for Longford Town who would still trail their closest rivals by 2 points should they achieve victory. Kevin Doherty and Jamie Duffy return for the hosts, tempered by the absence of Dave Freeman and the suspended Damien Brennan. Dave Mooney is the key man for the Town, now the division's No1 marksman - but his side's superb run has hit a wall with three consecutive league defeats. The Blues arrive off the back of a win over Derry last week; their form has been erratic at the best of times. Kenny Browne and Daryl Kavanagh are long-term absentees; Karl Bermingham and Packie Holden may return, although the latter is unlikely to oust Dean Delaney. Better off playing the lotto than trying to pick a winner here.

Cork City v Shamrock Rovers

The Leesiders have yet to score against Rovers in 2007, and the return of Dean Lawrence and Danny O'Connor should stiffen up the Hoops' wounded resolve following their midweek debacle in Wicklow. Aidan Price and Padraig Amond are absentees for the visitors, along with suspended 'keeper Barry Murphy and Paul Shiels. Stephen O'Brien comes into the squad as cover. City are the division's form side - 4 wins and 2 draws in their last 6 games - and a win here would draw them level on points with their opponents, adding a veneer of respectability to their disappointing season thus far. Colin Healy and Daragh Ryan return from 1 match bans, although Ryan is still struggling with a pelvic problem. Gareth Farrelly didn't feature in last week's win over Derry City, and Rico will welcome his return to the field of play. With all three of City's strikers in good form, this promises to be an intriguing contest. Two away trips within a three evenings makes this a trickier test than usual for the part time Hoops. I'm going to sit this one out.

Drogheda United v Sligo Rovers

By all accounts, Rovers were well in the contest last week against Bohs before Seamus Coleman's robust challenge on Joxer. They presented a threat up front against a well organised defence and will be hoping to duplicate that at United Park. Coleman, of course, will not be part of Paul Cook's designs. Keith Foy may well continue at left full, with Daniel Ventre freed from midfield to deputise on the other flank. Brian Cash is a doubt, but should make it, and the return of Adam Hughes and Conor O'Grady to the midfield area will boost Rovers' slim chances of leaving Louth with at least a point - they've already shipped five goals without reply against Paul Doolin's side this term. The Bit O'Red have been less than inspiring on the road - their eight defeats bettered only by Bray and Waterford and matched by Longford. Stuart Byrne is available after a one game ban; it will be tough on last week's goalscorer Paul Keegan should he be obliged to stand down - there's little room for sentiment in winning titles. Can't see Drogs slipping up, can't be bothered at the price.

Galway United v Longford Town

A crucial tie for both sides, how Galway must wish it were an away fixture. Their abysmal tally of eight points at home makes for the division's worst home record by a length. Both sides suffered setbacks last weekend, but the hosts have the luxury of four players returning from suspension. Stephen O'Flynn, John Lester, Wes Charles and Derek O'Brien will more than compensate for the absence of Regi Nooitmeer. Longford's wispy squad fields without suspended centre-half Kevin Doherty and the unfortunate Dave Freeman. Jamie Duffy continues to struggle with injury. Another must-win contest for both sides in the tight confines of the bottom feeders. Some bookies are 10/11 Galway, - they cant be trusted at odds on. Stan James are 5/4 the home side but I think the 13/5 against Longford is better value.

UCD v Bray Wanderers

With both sides now approaching football's equivalent of middle-age; the much coveted midtable security, this may not be the most engaging of contests. Bray's unexpected midweek victory was their first in nine games; and the first time that they've managed three goals this season - the fact that this occurred against nine players should not go unnoticed. The Students have had a clearout of the physio's room and Alan McNally and Ian Bermingham return following successful U21 appearances in midweek. Colin Tresson remains absent for Wanderers. All but one of Bray's points won on the road have come against inferior opposition; the televised encounter at Turner's Cross the exception. Pete Mahon's men have not lost to lower placed opponents at Belfield this season. There's some Even Money UCD around. Not a bad bet.

Waterford United v Derry City

Peter Hutton returns from suspension to restore some familiarity to the City backline as they throw one eye towards next Tuesday's League Cup Final - that game holds far greater significance for the Candystripes, it's their last available avenue to Setanta Cup football next term, and may have a bearing on team selection for this game. The Blues are in trouble; with David Breen, Dave Mulcahy, Packie Holden and Karl Bermingham joining Daryl Kavanagh and Kenny Browne on the list of absentees. Added to that is the doubt over Paul McCarthy's fitness. For a side which has collected just five of the last 33 points on offer, it's a big ask even if the Candystripes are at less than full muster. Derry look the bet of the weekend.

This weekend's live offering promises to be a tight encounter at Richmond Park. Bohs have netted just seven times away from Phibsboro this year, and three of those came in their recent win at Bray. Nonetheless, with almost a full squad to choose from and Chris Turner bedding in nicely alongside Steve O'Donnell the Gypsys will be confident of extending their good record against the Saints. It must be acknowledged that no side has a better points tally at home than Johnny Mc's side, and with the points of equal importance to both sides it should be very interesting. Looks a draw, low on goals.

Cork and Pats to take advantage of injury problems

Bohemians v Sligo Rovers

There's a tangible air of menace when this pair have met lately. To add a jalapeno to the spice, both are vein to vein in the pursuit of a top four finish. Bohs are in better shape, with Thomas Heary out for the season and Neale Fenn doubtful. Brian Murphy, in my opinion the best keeper in the league this season, is fit again - but whether or no he ousts Alan Blayney is SC's call. The absence of Adam Hughes and Conor O'Grady through suspension is a huge blow for the Bit O'Red given that there has been nothing between the duo in recent clashes. Paul Cook is expected to leave it late to decide on his starting eleven as he checks up on the walking wounded at Sligo. Even Money Bohs is a decent bet if they reproduce their Inchcore form.

Derry City v Cork City

John Robertson is already talking about next season's squad - small wonder now that his charges are but bit players in the closing stages of the league season. The home side wait upon the fitness of influential midfield pairing Barry Molloy and Ciaran Martyn, while Peter Hutton is suspended. Pat McCourt and PJ are definite non-starters so Dave McEwan will make his debut between the posts. Killian Brennan is another doubt for the Candystripes. Freescoring Cork have Johno available but will Rico drop the in-form Denis Behan to make way for the striker? Colin Healy serves a suspension, as does Daragh Ryan - so he won't feel too badly about missing out through injury this week. If Molloy, Martyn and Brennan join Hutton on the sideline then Cork are definite betting material.

Galway United v St. Patrick’s Athletic

Pats may be in line to pick up a precious three points against a Galway outfit stricken by injury and suspension. Their weekend off has led to a double whammy of bans with Stephen O'Flynn, Wes Charles and John Lester out. Derek O'Brien also serves a ban - missing his first game of the season. Daryl Robson is injured and Regi Nooitmeer is 50/50. The call has been sent out to Billy Clery to dust off his boots, along with a couple of U21 players. The visitors have Joe Ndo fit, with Anto Murphy returning from suspension and the cup-tied Glen Fitzpatrick available. Darragh Maguire and Colm Foley continue their recuperations. With the Hoops game off this offers Johnny Mc's side the chance to put some serious pressure on their rivals - although they'll need to win by six to take second spot. A better chance to pick up 3 points the Saints will seldom get in Galway.

U.C.D. v Waterford United

This pair of relegation flirts pair up at Belfield following varying fortunes in their recent FAI Cup adventures. Waterford's dismissal allows them to focus on the more serious business of Premier Division survival against the conquerors of Derry City. The Blues are bolstered by the return of Cathal Lordan and Dave Mulcahy, but Pat Flynn must sit this one out. With Bray not in action this weekend it offers Gareth Cronin's side to draw level on points with the Seagulls should they defeat the Students. For a team who have collected maximum points just once on their travels this term, it's seems an unlikely scenario. Pete Mahon hopes to have Ian Bermingham and Paul Byrne available; the on loan Peter Hynes is also back in contention. Both of these sides have won just one of their last six outings; no surprise then that they are at the wrong end of the table.

Belying their humble league position, Longford Town have been racking up points like a sober Alex Higgins over the last eight games and champions in waiting Drogheda United will not wish to become their latest victims. One win in five games is hardly the stuff of league titles, but the Drogs continue to set the pace at the business end of the table. Stuart Byrne is suspended, while both Richie Baker and Aidan O'Keeffe contend with calf injuries and may miss out. Alan Matthews' side are without the banned Pat Sullivan, but the cup-tied trio of Colm James, Ian Ryan and Sean Kelly are back in contention for the Ford FAI Cup semi-finalists.

The Students pack their bags yet again for their fifth away tie in cup competition this season; and their second quarter-final at the Randywell. Their journey may not be a wasted one however, given the striking problems facing the home squad. Sammy Morrow is out, with both Mark Farren and Kevin McHugh doubtful; 'though one must assume that Robbo will press at least one of them into service. Pat McCourt and Neil McCafferty are also keeping the Scot guessing - Kevin Deery returns from suspension. Derek Doyle is definitely out for the visitors following his unpleasant legbreak last weekend. They've endured injury issues themselves and will need as many of their walking wounded available as possible for this last shot at salvaging something from their rather erratic campaign. Looks a Derry win, not a betting price though.

Longford Town v Limerick 37

Lucky Longford draw ailing Lims! They were the side that all seven potential opponents wanted at home. Alan Matthews would certainly swap victory here for a place in next season's Premier Division fixture list; but both would do nicely. The Town have been in flying form lately and will be turbo boosted by the return from suspension of the league's joint top scorer and August's Player of the Month, Dave Mooney. Paul McGee's side take to the field without Ross Cosgrave who is suspended. The First Division side have won just one of their last eight league games - but stranger things have happened in the cup. Coral are 4/6 against a Longford win, it's too big.

There will be barely 200 Cork fans amongst the 1250 allowed into the RSC for this one. Gareth Cronins side - well when they are bad, they are poison; when they are good they have the beating of Cork City. Lately it's been poison though. They surprised many by ending Sligo Rovers interest in the competition in the last round. Dean Delaney and Kenny Browne should be back, but Paul McCarthy is suspended and Daryl Kavanagh is out for the remainder of the season. eL Rico's side have struck seven goals in their last two outings; the Blues have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier Division, but have impressed with clean sheets in both of their most recent league assignments. Coral again are feeling generous with 11/10 against Cork. It's a huge price.

Cup football at its highest temperature as these two auld Dublin wans vie for some silverware to embellish their respective seasons. Patchy form has followed the pair around recently and home advantage may swing it for the Saints. They found the net four times last weekend; Keith Barker is improving with each outing, and Michael Keane has shown that he possesses as much of a threat from the deadball as Keith Fahey. Bohs will be hurting after conceding their unbeaten home record to the Hoops early in the week - Darren Mansaram, Neale Fenn and Mark Rossiter's availability should help to increase their goal threat somewhat after two consecutive blanks. Anto Murphy is suspended for the Saints. Pats rightly favs, nothing attractive in the prices for me though.

Cork City v Longford Town

Cork hinted at a return to form past when they scored four against UCD last Monday; Longford Town can be expected to provide a more stubborn obstacle. Mick Devine returns from suspension to challenge Mark McNulty between the posts for the 4th placed side. Strangely, only the Drogs, Shamrock Rovers and Cork themselves have scored more on the road this season than Longford - of course, the absence through suspension of the division's top marksman Dave Mooney will blunt the Town's ambition somewhat.

Drogheda United v Derry City

Kevin Deery is a definite absentee for the visitors who continue to impress under the guidance of John Robertson. The Candystripes are unbeaten in their last eight league assignments, conceding just twice in the process. There may have been a whiff of good fortune surrounding their win over Pats last time out, but there was no doubting there defensive qualities. Drogheda on the other hand are showing signs of pulling up lately, and Paul Doolin will be eager to see his side re-assert their perceived superiority with a win here. Guy Bates' first goal for the Drogs will have given his boss some cheer as he watched his team complete a fourth successive league game without collecting maximum points.

Pats have still managed just a single win from their last seven league matches; the visit of a poor Bray side should allow them to improve upon that dismal statistic. The absence through suspension of the influential Alan Cawley is tempered by the return to action of Chris Deans, Ray Kenny and Mark Duggan. Last week's clean sheet against fellow strugglers Waterford was the Wicklow side's first since they took advantage of Galway's home woes back in July. Keith Fahey returns to an almost full strength squad for the hosts; just Colm Foley and Darragh Maguire remain sidelined.

Waterford United v Bohemians

Gareth Cronin has been singing the Blues lately as he's watched his side lose all but two of their last nine games. Last week's clean sheet versus Bray was their first in an almighty 18 games for the Blues; and things are not a whole lot better at the other end of the field either. Added to that gloom is the absence of Daryl Kavanagh for the remainder of the campaign. Unsurprisingly, their recent record against Bohs is unimpressive. Speaking of the Gypsys, Owen Heary returns from suspension but both Darren Mansaram and Conor Powell will be watching from the stand at the RSC. Alan Blayney continues to stand in for the injured Brian Murphy, while the mythical Harpal Singh may make an appearance. Sean Connor's side have netted just seven times on the road thus far; they should improve on that here.

Shamrock Rovers v Galway United

The central midfield duo of Eric McGill and Alan Reynolds both serve suspensions for this one against an increasingly confident Galway United side, who arrive on the back of five games without defeat. Daryl Robson returns for the visitors. Nothing but a win will do for Pat Scully's side who were uncharacteristically outfought by Longford last time out at Tolka Park. There hasn't been more than a goal between the pair in recent meetings; this game should be no different.

Sligo Rovers V UCD

The Students have been beaten twice already this season by Rovers. The return of Paul Byrne is imminent; he may play a part here. Pete Mahon's side have been erratic of late, but the concession of four goals against Cork will have wounded the visitor's pride. Sometimes beaten, never trounced can no longer be their motto. Following a run of four wins on the bounce which propelled them into the title race, things have slowed down for Rovers with no wins in any of their last five games. The return of Daniel Ventre will restore the equilibrium of their back four, while Steve Manson also returns from suspension. Last week's goal against Longford Town was their first in three outings and they'll be hoping that Faz Kudozovic and Matt Judge can start to chip in again.

St Pats the value bet in the Brandywell

Derry City v St. Patrick's Athletic

With Rovers sitting this weekend's action out, the Saints get the chance to steal into second spot at the Brandywell. But they'll have to face the challenge of scoring their first win on the road since April without the gifts of Keith Fahey, who is suspended and Colm Foley who is still out injured. It's a tough task for the Dublin side with the Candystripes strengthening week on week under the guidance of John Robertson. Mark McChrystal's injury is set to keep him out for the remainder of Derry's campaign, while Pat McCourt and Sammy Morrow hope to shake off the knocks they picked up last week. Alan Moore, Gary Beckett and Ola Tidman are also out of Robertson's plans. Looks a draw, but value hounds will certainly be keen on the 12/5 St Pats on offer in places.

Galway United v Drogheda United

Four weeks on from their dramatic comeback at United Park, Galway again stand in the way of the prospective champions. Since that embarassing home defeat to Waterford, Tony Cousins side have taken points from the Drogs, Cork and Sligo - shaking off that home win issue in the process. So, not an uncomplicated challenge for the visitors who shipped their first league defeat in twelve outings before the cameras last Monday. It's all about the reaction from Paul Doolin's side now, the trip to Terryland will certainly test their mettle; remember they struggled here earlier in the campaign. Team news suggests that the visitors will have Richie Baker available but look set to be without the central midfield duo of Stuart Byrne and Shane Robinson. Daryl Robson is unavailable for Galway, with Regi Noooitmeer stil injured; on the plus side John Russell and David Cooke are back in contention. I'm keeping the faith with Doolo's boys at a general 10/11

Waterford United v Bray Wanderers

Two sides who wouldn't manage a win on an Xbox right now come head to head in the weekend's most significant clash. The visitors lie four points ahead of their opponents; realistically a draw would do the Seagulls - still a tall order for a side who have amassed a lonely point from the last eighteen on offer. Derek Tyrrell and Paul Dunphy return from inury spells, but without the services of Ray Kenny, Chris Deans and Mark Duggan it gets tougher. this is no ordinary Waterford side though - they too have an abject recent record, just three points from twenty four and nine goals conceded in their last three league games suggests that either side could win here. The Blues welcome the return of Dave Mulcahy from suspension, with Kenny Browne's return a posssibility also. The club were rocked by the news of talented midfielder Daryl Kavanagh's leg break in training midweek; he is out for the remainder of the season. Not one for punting.

Longford Town v Sligo Rovers

Rovers have had the upper hand in meetings between the pair this season, but things are different now. Alan Matthews' side are the form team in the Premier Division - five wins in six games is title winning form and their momentum may yet lift them to the relative safety of a relegation play-off. Sligo's league form is not far behind the Town's, but a failure to win any of their last four games in all competitions aligned to shooting blanks in their last two, points to a slowdown of sorts for the Bit O'Red. Seamie Coleman returns to right full, both Daniel Ventre and Stephen Manson miss out through suspension, and Brian Cash is injured. The prices look about right.

Entering the final third of the season, and it's deja vu as we relive the opening day fixtures. Bohs need to do better than the scoreless draw they achieved back in March; but one win in their last five league outings suggests that a near full strength Drogs eleven need not fret too much. The Drogs can be backed at over 6/4 with Bet Chronicle - an extraordinary price which must be taken.

Derry City v Bray Wanderers

Despite the general acknowledgement that Eddie Gormley is putting together a talented and attractive side in Wicklow, four consecutive defeats suggests strongly that it is a work in progress. Derry are unbeaten in six games now and should have too much for the Seagulls. Clive Delaney and Mark Duggan are suspended for the visitors who still miss Paul Dunphy, Colm Tresson and Derek Tyrrell; but John Broderick and Paul Caffrey make welcome returns from injury. The Candystripes have enough in reserve to cover the permanent fixture that is Eddie McCallion as he too serves a suspension. I don't see anything other than a Derry win, but at price I can leave it.

What is left to say about Galway United's abysmal home record? The recent return of Stephen O'Flynn is corrupted by his suspension for the visit of a Rovers side who have won their last four in the league. Add to that the fact that the Bit O'Red don't draw away games and it's unlikely that the Galway faithless will get that elusive win this weekend. 7/5 is best price against Sligo, it's worth a small interest.

UCD v Shamrock Rovers

Following a dismal run of four consecutive lessons, the Students have steadied the ship somewhat with impressive outings against the likes of Bohs and Pats. Rovers are re-establishing their form after an eventful period of late. Ronan Finn's knee needs rest for the home side who hope to have Tony McDonnell available. Barry Ferguson is suspended for Rovers who are now without both first choice centre halves. I'm passing this over for betting purposes.

An opening day defeat to the Blues means that Rico will have his side firmly focussed for this engagenent. Johno sparkled against Kilkenny City last weekend and City's league hopes rest on the continuation of same. Dave Mulcahy's return will be a boost to the home side. This pair are vying for the Jekyll and Hyde title, ands both desperately need maximum points for vastly different reasons. O'Flynn's return to form makes backing Cork at any odds against price a good investment.

Flancare Park is a dangerous place to go at the moment. Dave Mooney is scoring in his sleep, and the Town are showing serious signs of recovery. Dave Rogers is suspended for the Saints, but Gary O'Neill should be available. Colm James, Sean Kelly and Ian Ryan were cup-tied and return for the home side. I'm keeping the powder dry on this one.

Waterford United v Sligo Rovers

In form Sligo Rovers take a depleted squad to the RSC. Conor O'Grady and Keith Foy join Daniel Ventre on the suspended list as the conqerors of Shamrock Rovers in the last round attempt to take their league form into the country's premier knockout competition. The Blues have issues of their own, not least their record of five defeats in their last six league outings. But strange things happen in cup football - Shane Harte misses out through injury, Dave Mulcahy is cup-tied and Dave Warren is suspended. None of that seems strange at all on reflection. The 7/5 against Sligo at BetChronicle is a decent offer.

Limerick 37 v Douglas Hall

Paul McGee's side have suffered from slippage lately, one point from the last nine available is the kind of form that will have the 2nd round's giant-killers rubbing their hands in anticipation of further glory. Having rattled four past Cobh Ramblers in the previous round this Douglas Hall team need not fear Lims, who are without the cup-tied Tommy Barrett, the injured Wayne Colbert and Paul Danagher who is suspended. Stephen O'Donnell misses out for the visitors; he's had to be content with a trip to Thailand as part of the Irish Universities squad. I don't know enough about the non-league side to wager on this game.

Bray Wanderers v St. Patrick's Athletic

Derek Tyrrell, Paul Dunphy and Paul Caffrey are out for Bray. Colm Tresson and John Broderick are 50/50. Clive Delaney and Mark Duggan saw red last week and sit this one out also. Eddie Gormley has yet to put one over on his alma mater since taking the tiller at the Carlisle Grounds but his talented young squad possess the ability to spring a surprise. Can Pats go one better than last season? With the title slipping further into the fog, the cup represents Johnny Mc's last chance of showing progression with some silverware this term. Both sides will welcome the distraction following some indifferent recent league form. Pats to win, the 11/10 generally on offer is a remarkable price, it must be taken.

Cork City v Kilkenny City

Another boss at a big club who needs to take the bare look of the trophy cabinet is el Rico. The time has come for his side to exhibit their quality against inferior opposition. Tommy Gaynor's arrival at Buckley Park has certainly livened things up and his squad report a clean bill of health following last week's victory over Limerick 37. Darren Murphy and Brian O'Callaghan are back in contention for a Cork side which has failed to win its last four games. Not one for betting.

Finn Harps v Derry City

What's sure to be an internecine clash at Finn Park has captured the imagination of the Northwest's footballing fraternity, and sorority. Harps' top scorer Conor Gethins returns from a one game ban, as does Elokah Asokuh. Sean Hargan is available for the visitors, for whom Barry Molloy is suspended. City have rediscovered their goalscoring touch, but will need to be at their peak to slow down one of the country's most confident sides. 11/10 with Will Hill against Derry is a very tempting price, and I'll be taking some of it.

Longford's three game winning run with no clothes on was ended by the Candystripes last weekend; they should have enough in reserve to see off the challenge of Fanad United. Alan Matthews is a past master when it comes to winning cups and should have his troops naked and ready to begin another winning streak. Again I'm swerving a game involving a non-league side.

Bohemians v Cork City

As good an opportunity as Bohs are going to have of defeating Cork City this season, as the Gypsys defend the last unbeaten home record in the Premier Division. Both sides have been misfiring in the league, although the hosts will take heart from their epic efforts in midweek. With Royboy history now and Denis Behan injured the visitors turn to the brittle John O'Flynn for goals and Leon McSweeney should get another opportunity to establish his credentials. Mick Devine's suspension is countered by the return of Sean Kelly. The Bohs faithful will be eager to get a glimpse of new signing Stephen McDonnell at some point. With both sides in suspect form it's best to pass this over for betting purposes.

Derry City v Longford Town

With three wins on the bounce under their jockstraps Longford will be getting used to a new feeling - confidence; Derry's problems in front of goal continue to hinder their progress - just one goal in their last five outings has forced Robbo into action. Sean Hargan is suspended while his red mist evaporates, but Killian Brennan, Mark Farren and the pivotal Barry Molloy return from injury. Sean Kelly returns to add his gifts to Alan Matthew's model-thin squad. Backing the draw at 13/5 may be the best way to capitalize on Derry's modesty in front of the goals.

Drogheda United v St. Patrick's Athletic

The Drogs have not beaten Pats over 90 minutes this season; in truth they don't need to this time either. A safe draw will do the leaders who will have Graham Gartland and Guy Bates available. Despite rumours to the contrary Joe Ndo it seems has not been sacked by the Saints and he's expected to play a part here following an appearance for the U21's earlier in the week. The Saints' profligacy (just 10 points from the last 27) has been met with Drogs' consistency ( 23/27) and the onus is squarely on Johnny Mc's side in this crucial title clash. Anything over 3/1 is value against St Pats.

UCD v Galway United

New signing Paul Murphy is available for the home side, with Shane McFaul and Paul Crowley returning from suspension. The visitors welcome the return of Stephen O'Flynn as they attempt to extricate themselves from the clinging soil of the relegation zone. Longford's new-found zeal must be causing Tony Cousins some sleepless nights and how he would love Terryland Park to be zapped by a meteorite forcing the Galwegians to play their remaining fixtures away from home. But I digress. Despite what looks like a poor run of form on paper, the Students have pushed Pats and Rovers to their limits, either side of a snatched victory over Bohs. Looks a draw, though I'm not playing at the prices.

There is merit in Pat Scully's comments about his side's recent efforts, although the manager's attempts at Matt Talbotism seem a little contrived. His squad are almost at full-strength, only Aidan Price remains absent. The Blues ended a dismal run of four consecutive defeats thanks to the generosity of Galway United's home form last week, but the Hoops will be afforded no time to mope following their semi-final defeat in midweek. I expect Rovers to return to winning ways, the generally available 6/5 is a decent price.

Sligo Rovers v Bray Wanderers

Sligo are playing some sweet football with Paul Cook at the helm, and picking up points to boot. Matt Gordon and James Meredith have still to figure for the Bit O'Red following their recent moves, while Matt Judge's ankle is a focus of concern. The home side will be feeling unbeatable right now, and that's just the way Bray like 'em. Following his side's abject effort against Longford Town a fortnight ago, Eddie G squeezed a heroic performance from Wanderers when the Drogs came to the Seagull's nest last weekend. Paul Dunphy is a long-term absentee for the visitors. BetChronicle go 10/11 a Sligo win - it's a good bet.

Cork get the opportunity to set the record straight against the side which embarrassed them back in May. Sean Kelly is suspended after last week's dismissal; there are a few injury worries for Damo also. Sligo are boosted by their midweek acquisitions, while Rafaele Cretaro is available after suspension. City; unbeaten in their last 6, haven't tasted defeat at home; while Rovers have not really impressed against the big boys on their travels. Looks a Cork win, don't like the prices though.

The Blues have their suspended quintet back, plus the formidable presence of Dave Mulcahy. Apart from that, their form makes for depressing reading. 4 consecutive defeats and just 2 points from 30 on the road; but wait....they're away to Galway United. Bottom trawlers Longford Town collected their only 3 points on the road at Terryland, so hope springs etc. Still, draws against Derry, Sligo and the Hoops in their last five games hint at the potential potential of Tony Cousins' side. Greg O'Halloran joins the cause, and Stephen O'Flynn, John Russell and Dave Cooke should be available. There's some Even Money Galway about- not a bad bet at all.

It's hard to believe that the Town took all nine points in last season's duels between this pair. Alan Matthews will take no solace in the 'when your down your down adage' - Mark Rutherford is out for a while, alongside Daire Doyle and the recently recruited Ian Ryan. Damien Brennan returns from suspension but new signing Sean Kelly must sit this one out. Kevin Hunt and Conor Rafferty return from bans for Bohs, while Dessie Byrne serves one. SC's men have failed to win at the last three attempts, managing a single goal in those 270 or so minutes; and this is not a typo- Longford have picked up maximum points from their last 2 games. Could be a little trickier than the odds suggest, I'm not betting here.

A beautifully poised game should see little betwixt this duo, as was the case at the Randywell earlier in the season. Unless of course Rovers really are feeling the effects of their hectic pace thus far. Robbo has Derry close to where they were for the past two years; goals continue to be a problem though. Since sending 4 past Sligo Rovers the Candystripes have gone 4 without scoring in all competitions. Rovers conceded their first goals in six games last week and that performance hinted that Aidan Price's return cannot come too soon. Looks like one for playing the low goals. I don't expect Derry to score.

Following their Euro caning this offers a chance for the Saints to restore some pride and confidence against an uncharacteristically inconsistent Students' side. Pete Mahon's men like the cameras 'though as shown when they gave Shamrock Rovers a scare last time on live TV. They finally left a run of four defeats behind them with last week's last gasp win over Bohs. Shane McFaul's suspension will not help their cause in the tough midfield area. Peter Hynes and Pats' loan player Paul Murphy are available to beef up the visitors' goalshy frontline. Glen Fitzpatrick can do likewise for the must win Saints, who have been struggling to win games themselves of late - just two in their last eight league games. Pats are a little short to be supported.

Bray Wanderers v Longford Town

Both of these sides had good wins last time out; Bray have risen to a midtable spot, while Longford will be hoping forlornly that their first win in 12 is a stepping stone to better things. It's two months since the Seagulls lost at home and Alan Matthews' side have yet to collect maximum points on the road. Clive Delaney and Gary McCabe are back from suspension for Wanderers, who will be without John Broderick, Colm Tresson, Mark Duggan, Derek Tyrrell, Paul Caffrey and Paul Dunphy. The manager of the 21's will be receiving a phonecall no doubt. The Town added Mark Rutherford to their wounded last weekend; he joins Ian Ryan and Daire Doyle on the physio's bench while Damien Brennan serves a ban. On the plus side new boys Colm James and Sean Kelly should be available and Kevin Doherty made an appearance against Sheffield United in midweek - Matthews may be able to afford the luxury of a substitution this week. Not really a match for betting in my opinion but Blue Square at 7/2 against Longford would seem not to have picked up on the Bray team news yet.

Cork take a 5 game unbeaten run to Inchicore, buoyed by the news that Roy O'Donovan will be staying on to bolster their title challenge. John O'Flynn limped off last week and Royboy is carrying a hangstring - City will need both of them at their peak if they are to take three points from Pats. Alan Kirby's return should help to bring some balance to the Saints sometimes complex midfield area. This is yet another 'biggest game of the season' for Damian Richardson, who is hoping to pick the Saints' side, as well as his own, this week. The prices look right to me, very little variance between the bookies.

Drogheda United v Waterford United

Waterford would not be relishing this fixture at the best of times, but they travel without 5 players who have all picked up suspensions. Kenny Browne, Pat Flynn, Robbie Hedderman, Shane Harte and Alan Mulcahy are the villains; although Harte and Mulcahy have been out with injury anyhow. Paul Doolin laughs in the face of injury and suspension - his club have taken their worst and risen to pole position. It's five wins and two draws from seven versus six defeats and a win from seven. Drogheda look as much a banker as you will find in any sport this weekend, but the bookies know it and at best odds of 1/3 I'll be investing elsewhere.

UCD V Bohemians

UCD soiled their bibs last week with a disinterested performance at Longford. Methinks they'll be paying attention this time around. Both sides have failed to convince in front of goal, and in that respect Paul Byrne's absence is a bodyblow to the Students. Hard to see them piercing the Bohs backline, so it's all about not conceding. Conor Rafferty and Kevin Hunt are out, although Hunt has had something of a cameo role of late. Shane McFaul should be back to win the midfield battle and Pat 'the spectacular goal' McWalter may feature for the home side at some stage. I like Bohs here, and the 11/8 widely available is a betting price.

Sligo Rovers v Shamrock Rovers

Tonight's live TV viewing picks up where the Rovers left off following the rambunctious FAI Cup tie at Tolka Park; since then both sides have progressed well. The hosts have seen off both Cork and Bohs at the Showgies so they are not to be taken lightly by the title challengers. Privately, it must be a worry for Pat Scully that his side are showing signs of legginess - Tadhg Purcell ran himself into the ground last Monday night along with his teammates, and they're up against full time opposition again. We may see a few changes on the Hoops side -Pat Scully picks from the same squad as last Monday. Sligo are without Rafaele Cretaro but hope to have Brian Cash available as well as returning striker John Bellew. Should be a cracker. I'm surprised by the 6/4 against Shamrock Rovers, I wonder if the bookies will be surprised when my wedge lands in front of them?

John Robertson is unlikely to let his players lick their wound following their European exit; it's all systems go now for a charge up the table. City are finding some cohesion again under the new boss and should have enough to see off underachieving Galway; then again it's an away match for Tony Cousins' side. Since beating Pats at Inchicore they have embarked upon a run of 6 without a win in all competitions. The Candystripes rattled Bohs' cage with some style last week -they may be without the departing Darren Kelly, Pizza is an able replacement. Galway are labouring under a heavy injury list, although new signing John Fitzgerald is in contention for a slot at the back. Derry to win, but there's better value elsewhere.

Galway United's long suffering fans again unwrap their hopes of that elusive first home win in the
league when Bray Wanderers travel to Terryland. The Seagulls have proven themselves to be nobody's mugs and may well prolong United's record. Tony Cousin's side have lost just one of their last five - you've guessed it - at home to Cork City. With just two points separating the pair at the wrong end of the table, a win for Tony Cousins' side will lift them above their opponents. Ciaran Foley is available after suspension, 'though he hasn't been commanding a regular starting slot lately. Small stakes on Bray at some of the 5/2 available is a reasonable investment. Exchange players are more likely to get a return by laying Galway at evens or thereabouts.

Waterford United v Sligo Rovers

Gareth Cronin presided over a miserable midweek effort from his side as they recorded their fifth defeat in six games; relegation form in any man's formbook. Sligo's most recent defeat was their humbling at the altar of resurgent Derry City - no one fancies facing a side with a new boss to impress - Rovers had no luck in that draw. That belch aside, Paul Cook's squad have done well under his stewardship; good football for the most part has been matched with a decent run of results. With wins under their belt at Longford, Galway and UCD they need not fear the Blues. Cathal Lordan is available after missing the Cork game by prior agreement. Several firms make Waterford favourites - it's a view I disagree with and recommend a bet on Sligo at 15/8 or so.

A few weeks back this one would have been a home win banker; not so now. Just two points garnered from three top of the table clashes has distanced then from the title race; and City who have shown real signs of rediscovering last season's form could endanger one of the league's last remaining unbeaten home records. Sean Connor will be working hard to lift his side following last week's hurtful defeat at Drogheda - the only way is up for John Robertson and Derry City. An intriguing game, probably best watched.

Longford Town v UCD

Goalfest fetishists will be circumnavigating Flancare Park this weekend, although this pair shook the football world by sharing 4 goals at Belfield earlier in the campaign. UCD, for whom Paul Crowley returns from suspension, proved their ability before a television audience last Monday. Can they bring the same level of commitment and skill to bear in less salubrious surroundings? Goals were a problem for the Students, but the leaky Longford rearguard - 11 conceded in four consecutive losses - will not provide as tough a challenge as the Rovers edition. Powers and 365 go 7/5 a UCD victory - it's value, and the bet of the week.

Cork City v Drogheda United

Cork City kick started a serious league challenge with a midweek win over Waterford United; now the potential champions elect are at the Cross. The Drogs have ridden out the worst of their injury crisis and sit deservedly at the top of the pile - no slur intended. City are unbeaten at home, but don't score too many in front of their own fans; United have been beaten just once on their travels, that was at Richmond Park. There should be a real bite about this, but a draw will do Paul Doolin's side, and such a result is well within their capabilities. Both sides come into the game on the back of consecutive victories. Joe Gamble returns from suspension to bolster the City midfield. Take the best price on the draw if you must have a bet.

Derry City v Sligo Rovers

John Robertson was forced to intervene in Derry's fortunes earlier than planned when he felt he could take no more at Cobh - expect an improved effort from the Candystripes here. Robbo's intervention did the trick, but four draws followed by two defeats in their last six league outings; aligned to the miserable haul of four goals at the Randywell this season, and a posse of disaffected footballers does not bode well for the home side. The return of Ciaran Martyn and the capture of Sammy Morrow should lift morale. Sligo have been flying of late and Paul Cook's side have recently tasted victory against Bohs, Rovers, UCD and Longford Town. Chris Turner is definitely out for the visitors. It's a bit early to be trusting Derry at odds-on, I'll pass here.

Longford Town v Shamrock Rovers

The last week has seen the door swing open on many occasions at Tolka Park. John Martin is unavailable to Pat Scully by prior arrangement. Alan Reynolds is, although a lack of match fitness may curtail his involvement; Derek Tyrrell is in the squad but none of the current injured crop have recovered sufficiently to merit involvement. Padraig Amond and John McGuinness are recalled from their respective loan spells. Stephen O'Brien should continue in goal. Longford's limited squad means that Alan Matthews' side practically picks itself. With one of the division's meanest defences taking on the division's meanest forward line it's safe to say a home win is unlikely. Coral offer a tempting Even Money against the Rovers win, the unsettled line up makes it not quite tempting enough however.

The Students have faced a fairly generous run of fixtures recently; only the Sligo fixture was a tester for them. They face a Drogheda side coming off the back of what Bray boss Eddie Gormley described as the 'best performance by a League of Ireland side I have ever seen.' That was following a 4-1 caning at the hands of the Drogs. The usual injury list applies with the visitors; a positive spin on same suggests that Doolo has accidentally come upon a perfect striking blend between Ristila and Zayed. No one has picked up more points on their away days than the Setanta Cup holders. Pete Mahon will be delighted to hear that this will be a tough examination for the Students. Corals 6/5 Drogs is too big to ignore, El Punters bet of the week.

Well, which Waterford side are we going to see this week - the soluble outfit that dissolved in Bray last week, or the heroic performers of Dalymount Park? Gareth Cronin's side will be need to be at their best to contain a Pats eleven which is back to winning form after two consecutive league reversals. But four games without a win suggests they have a mountain to climb against the table-toppers. No reason to think Pats won't win this, plenty of 8/11 about but wouldn't bother backing the single.

Sean Connor's side have conceded just twice at Dalymount this season and are protecting one of only two unbeaten home records. The visitors have lost five of their seven away fixtures, but are boosted by last week's victory over fellow strugglers Waterford. The TV cameras usually lift a team's performance level - Bohs v Waterford exemplifies this. The Seagulls took a point from Richmond Park recently and have already defeated the Gypsy's in league action this term. I think Bohs might struggle a bit here and I'd be much more comfortable laying than backing at 4/7.

With Drogheda resting up until Monday night Pats are prersented with the opportunity to reclaim top spot for a few days at least. The Saints lost on their last league outing before their own fans and have collected only one point from the last nine available. That injection of new blood is badly needed to rejuvenate Johnny Mc's side. Alan Kirby is suspended following his hissy fit last week, likewise John Frost. In their favour, the visitors are the once mighty Derry City who have gone five without a win under the reluctant stewardship of stalwart club man Peter Hutton. With 2 transfer requests handed in, and a creeping apathy within the squad a win for the Candystripes would- well, would surprise everybody. The only current comparison betwixt City and Drogheda relates to the unavailable list - Darren Kelly, Dave Rogers, Killian Brennan, Pat McCourt, Alan Moore and Karl Bermingham. Greg O'Halloran is injured and suspended. Anything bigger than EVS against Pats should be snapped up. I got some 1.07 at Bet Chronicle (who have either revised their trading policy or have decided I don't have a clue what I'm doing as they are now laying a decent bet again!)

Shamrock Rovers v Bohemians

This is the fixture that the Gardai look out for every season; a volatile mix of passion and points at Tolka Park. Unfortunately for the 'home' side they are a little hamstrung for this one. Barry Murphy is still injured - thankfully not seriously - Aidan Price is out. Derek Pender caught his foot in his shorts - against Galway United, stop the sniggering - so he too is out of the Hoops back four. They will also miss the robust presence of Danny O'Connor in the centre circle. Bohs will be buoyed by their recent ascendancy to third spot, but there is still everything to play for between these two 'sporting' rivals. Dessie Byrne and Joxer are sitting this one out. Yes, Harpal Singh is still a Bohs player. One for the Asian Handicaps I reckon, any odds against Bohs with draw no bet is tempting.

Sligo Rovers v Longford Town
Given the kind of season that Longford are having one suspects that if they were three nil up with five minutes to go at the Showgies there would be a power failure. Alan Matthews miniscule squad have worked their jocks off in the face of great adversity. They have yet to win in the road and must face a Rovers side oozing confidence following three successive wins, without centre half Kevin Doherty. Paul Cook has lit a fire under the Bit O'Red and they are playing some very attractive football. Not too many sides come away from Belfield with a 2-0 win. Doesn't look to be any value from a punting perspective though.

It mighn't light the blue touchpaper in the same way as the Rovers / Bohs clash, but it will lack none of the intensity. As the footballer said to the interviewer, obviously, neither side are picking up enough points ; that's why they are struggling at the bottom. Oh no, I'm having a Paul Osam moment. Strangely, their performances have been satisfactory of late, as displayed by Waterford against Bohs last Monday. The Blues' inability to score on the road - only two this season - may well prove to be their downfall. Paul Dunphy is suspended for the Seagulls, if he played I'd strongly consider a bet on Bray, but his absence is enough to keep my powder dry here.

Cork City v Derry City

Peter Hutton takes the wheel for the third time this season with the Candystripes in this midtable 'clash'. Expect the Shed to be on its best behaviour, with lots of sporting applause and gentle encouragement for the protagonists. This would have been seen as a top of the table clash, preseason, but in reality these sides have shown hitherto hidden frailties. The Rebels have conceded just once at the Cross this season and are unbeaten before their adoring, if a little insensitive, fans. There's nothing of interest among the prices here.

Drogheda United v Longford Town

Following four games without a win the Drogs rediscovered their touch somewhat against Sligo Rovers in midweek. The talents of Tony Grant, Glen Fitzpatrick and Eamon Zayed do not compensate for the absence of Declan O'Brien; his goal threat is sorely missed by Paul Doolin , who is said to be lining up a move for a new striker. Defensively, the Setanta Cup holders should have enough about them to contain a Longford side which has failed to win on its last six outings; and haven't managed a goal against Drogheda in any of their last four meetings. Alan Matthews' side lost to their nearest rivals for the bottom spot twice in the last week and will not relish this trip. Include the Drogs in fun multiples but not really a singles proposition.

Pats expect to be without Joe Ndo and Stephen Paisley for the visit of Paul Osam's pet club -'I think they're in a false position, but the league table doesn't lie.' Stephen Brennan is also unlikely to feature following his knees-up with Joxer Kelly last Monday night. The injury free Westerners have collected eight of their eleven points on the road, and will be expected to lose but play well as they slip closer to the First Division. A warning to the Saints though, United have taken a point off both Bohemians and Cork City on their travels. A modest bet on the draw at anything over 3/1 is advised.

Waterford United v UCD

The Blues are enjoying their best form of the season, currently five games unbeaten. UCD suffered their first defeat in nine when they slipped up against Bray Wanderers midweek. If Pete Mahon is serious about that Setanta Cup spot his players will need to refocus if they are to take anything from the RSC. Brian Shorthall is back in harness for the Students, but Ronan Finn and Tony McDonnell remain absent. Vinny Sullivan has hit a hot goalscoring streak for the home side who can draw level with their opponents should they win. Coral are best priced UCD at 17/10, not quite big enough but getting there.

Shamrock Rovers v Bray Wanderers

Following six without a win, Bray have won two on the bounce and will be a confident outfit when they arrive at the Swaying Pylon. Top scorers Clive Delaney and Andrei Georgescu are among the Seagulls injury concerns; Stephen Fox and Colm Tresson complete that particular list.Rovers continue to be without Paul Shiels and Eric McGill; although this didn't seem to trouble them when seeing off Drogheda and Cork in their last two games. Ger O'Brien is a doubt; but its complacency that will be concerning Pat Scully. If the Hoops boss can eradicate any signs of same the Rovers should prevail. If Bray take to the field without their doubtful quartet then Rovers are a betting price at 4/6.

Sligo Rovers v Bohemians

Rovers have had a tough sequence of fixtures recently, and have performed well - the Bray debacle excepted - without picking up points. Of course this game has an added bite given Sean Connor's hasty abdication from the Showgies last season. The facts say that Paul Cook's charges have lost their last three games; SC's squad are surfing high following their assertive victory over the league leaders last time out. No one has lost fewer games than Bohs thus far; their defensive qualities have been well documented. Chris Turner's absence will be keenly felt by the home side, he has been the subject of some serious ogling by the big clubs of late. 11/8 Bohs with Sporting Odds is much too big a price and must be taken.

Derry City v Waterford United

The Blues are impressive of late; four games unbeaten is the stuff of fantasy for the non-travelling faithful. Derry City continue to confuse and confound, although they too are on a respectable unbeaten run. The Candystripes impressed nobody when these two met at the RSC earlier in the season, and Gareth Cronin's side will feel they have nothing to fear at the Brandywell; who would have thought that a year ago? I expect Derry to take the win, but they won't be backed by me at a best price 1/2.

The Town have always been resilient, and they have shown that virtue in no small amounts since their near-fatal points deduction. The failure to reel Waterford United in on Friday night was crucial; this time they have this season's 'Team That's Too Good To Go Down' in their sights. Already this duo are in the high dependency unit of the Premier Division; it's a must win game for both sides. Bet Chronicle's 11/5 against Galway is on the big side and worth an investment.

Graham Gartland's dismissal on Friday night means another reshuffle of Paul Doolin's deck. Captain Cook's Sligo are in their infancy and remain something of an unknown quantity; doubtless they will miss the influence of Chris Turner. The Drogs would welcome a repeat of Rovers' defensive performance against Pats, as they continue to miss the input of Fabio. No goals in their last two outings, and they haven't won inside ninety minutes in their last six games; certainly not the form of champions. I'm going to pass on this one.

Pat Scully has been waxing lyrical on the rub of the green; his side finally got their handout on Friday night when Garto saw red. Another in a long line of hard-working shifts from the young Hoops was rewarded with a win against one of the heavy-hitters of the Premier Division. And there's another one lumbering into their crosshair, as Cork City come to town. Fifth hosts fourth in a battle of the back fours. Cork's has been unusually porous in recent outings; Rovers haven't conceded since the Saints put a brace past them at Richmond Park a month ago. Shop around and you'll find a little 7/1 against the scoreless draw.

Drogheda United v Shamrock Rovers

Pat Scully felt hard done by when the Drogs took all three points at Tolka Park earlier this season, but his side have shown themselves to fall short against the elite sides in the Premier Division. The continued absence of Aidan Price is a big blow; while Derek Pender misses out also. That said, the Drogs have failed to win any of their last three outings and need to show their bouncebackability following the narrow defeat to league leaders St. Pats last Monday. Last season's deficiencies in front of goal came back to haunt them and Paul Doolin will be looking for Eamon Zayed to up his goal ratio with United defending an unbeaten home record at United Park. There's a little bit of odds against about for Drogheda fanciers, it's worth taking.

After finally picking up their first win against Bray Wanderers, the Tribesmen have failed to win in any of their subsequent four fixtures. Goals, or lack of same, continue to present a significant barrier to victory for the promoted side, who have still to record a win at Terryland Park this season. Their opponents haven't set the league alight on the road, with just two goals on their travels thus far. The Gypsys will be looking to bounce back after their first defeat in nine outings at the hands of Cork City. The combination of a team struggling to score taking on a team with the best defensive record in the division points to another disappointing evening for the Galway faithful. BetChronicle are 7/5 against a Bohs win, another good bet.

Johnny Mc will be hoping that his side's 'blip' is behind them as Paul Cook brings his charges to Inchicore. Only Bohs have prevented the Saints from winning on their own turf this season, and Sligo Rovers would need to produce a performance akin to their demolition of Cork City if they are to take anything from this game. Unfortunately, last week's defeat at the hands of Bray Wanderers suggests that an imminent reprise is unlikely. Not one for betting.

UCD v Derry City

History suggests that whoever scores first will win this game. It's difficult to know what to expect from what will be a wounded Derry side. Can Peter Hutton and Tony Gorman stoke the fires of a squad that may be feeling sorry for itself? Certainly, Pete Mahon would have preferred it if Nutsy had waited until after this fixture to resign. But we know what to expect from the Students who are unbeaten in their last seven league assignments. Derry have left me broke, pure broke. This pairing at the RSC is unlikely to provoke a scramble for tickets, but credit must go to a Blues outfit which has remained unbeaten in their last three league outings. Longford Town also deserve some kudos for the manner in which they responded to their points deduction; holding Derry City scoreless in Pat Fenlon's final game as manager of the Candystripes. Both sides have a chronic need for points; a chronic contest may ensue. There's better places to invest your money this weekend.
